Illinois Club Relays Recap
Notre Dame had a great time this past Saturday at Illinois Club Relays, which is often referred to as indoor club nationals. This year 24 teams came from across the greater midwest, including 6 of the top 10 ten teams in the country. The team had a spectacular performance, broke 5 club records, and had lots of fun!
The day started with Danny O'Gara breaking his own club record in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.37. Zach Bohmer also ran the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.82 and became the second person in club history to run this event.
Next up was the women's 4x800 meter dash. Gracie Welti, Karson Girvin, Lucy Noris, and Emily Arenas dominated. They broke 10 minutes, with a time of 9:59.27 and set a club record. The team came in third place and scored 6 points.
The men's 4x800 followed. Ryan Fryer, Andrew Roland, Zach Bohmer, and Sean Uhran ran a 8:44.33, the third fastest 4x800 in club history. (Splits were approximately 2:04.37, 2:09.20, 2:23.38, 2:07.17 - hand timed)
Danny O'Gara, Hezekiah Williams, Andrew Roland, and Andrew Jitendran then ran the 4x200 meter relay with a time of 1:50.15, the second fastest 4x200 in club history.
Next up was the long jump. Andrew Roland broke his own club record, jumping 5.77 meters. Andrew Jitendran also competed in the long jump and is the second person in club history to do so, jumping 3.46 meters. The two combined scored 1pt for the club (the average of the top 2 accounted for the team score).
After that Claire Reid and Sarah Harman ran the 3K with times of 11:13.92 and 13:01.46. They scored 2 points for the team.
Then the men's 3K was up. Ryan Fryer (9:05.70), Patrick Jamieson (9:14.74), Mitchell Jacob (9:56.29), Connor Evans (10:49.59), and Jonathan Karr (11:32.89) all had spectacular performances.
Emily, Karson, Gracie, and Lucy also ran the mile and absolutely killed it, won the event as a team, and scored 10 points! Their times were 5:12.52, 5:35.46, 5:42.18, and 5:50.54 respectively. Emily had a spectacular performance, winning the mile individually and breaking her own club record by over 7 seconds. She passed Thea Johnson from the University of Michigan to take the lead with a lap and a half to go and had a great finish. Right after Emily took the lead, the University of Illinois switched the song to Shipping Up to Boston, coincidence, I think not!
Last but certainly not least was the men's mile. Sean Uhran ran in the 3rd heat and had a great performance, coming 2nd in the heat with a time of 4:31.12. Next up was Pieter Heesters who was in heat 4. He was supposed to be in the first heat, but got moved due to circumstances outside the teams control. He absolutely destroyed the heat with a time of 4:30.10, which showcased that he should have been in the first heat. Winston Fairchild ran 4:48.18, Will Birmingham ran 5:10.23, and Andrew Jitendran ran 5:31.12, all having great races.
The team had a great time, broke 5 club records, set numerous PRs, and most importantly had lots of fun! The women placed 7th earning 18 points, and the men 17th with 1 point. The team is grateful for Illinois coordinating this track meet and looks forward to coming back in the future!
