IWU Polar Bear Invitational Recap
Running in High Winds
Notre Dame had a great time this past Saturday at the Polar Bear Invitational at Indiana Wesleyan University. The team ran outside in high winds, between 25-35mph with gusts over 50mph at times, and had lots of fun! 19 teams competed including several NAIA and NCAA teams, and the Purdue and Indiana run clubs were there as well.
The day started with Emily Arenas breaking the club record in the 1500m with a time of 5:01.77 and placing 5th overall. Lucy Noris followed with a spectacular time of 5:22.57.
Next up was the men's 1500m where Pieter Heesters placed 6th with a time of 4:15.18, and Winston Fairchild had a great time of 4:44.15.The men's 400m dash followed, and Connor Evans ran a 57.24, the second fastest time in club history.
Next up was the 200m dash where Hezekiah Williams ran a 29.11, the third fastest time in club history.
After that was the women's 5K, Karson Girvin and Sarah Harman both had spectacular performances. Karson placed third overall with a time of 19:36.75, and Sarah had a time of 21:46.74.
Finally was the Men's 5K. Sean Uhran and Ryan Fryer were in the first heat and had impressive times of 15:44.78 and 16:10.57. Sean even broke the club record despite the high winds and placed 10th overall. In the second heat were Josh Frabutt (18:29.96), Max Zarodniuk (18:31.30), Andrew Jitendran (18:39.76), and Jonathan Karr (19:28.59), who all had great performances.
Right before the women's 5K it was announced that the women's 5K would be 1 heat not 2, and the men's would be 2 and not 3. Sean and Ryan originally had over a hour to warm up and a few seconds later they only had 20 minutes. So great job to all the 5K runners who had their warmups cut short.
It is also worth noting again that the team was racing in high winds so these times would be even faster in normal running conditions.
The team had a great time, broke 2 club records, set PRs, and most importantly had lots of fun! We are grateful for Indiana Wesleyan coordinating this track meet and look forward to coming back in the future!
