From Club to Team USA

 From Club to Team USA

Shea Aquilano '23 just graduated from the University of Notre Dame and went to run at the next level.  During her time as part of Notre Dame Running Club she set 3 club records: the marathon, half-marthon, and 6K.

Additionally, she ran several ultramarathons during her time at Notre Dame. She destroyed competition and won the 2022 Indiana Trail 100 Mile, 2022 TransRockies 58 Mile, Fo Mo 50K, Bryce Canyon Ultras 30K, Ice Age 50 Mile, The HUFF 50K and the Falls 100 Ultra Trail Race, just to name a few. Because of her accomplishments, she was selected as one of 6 women to compete as part of the US Long Trail Team at the World Mountain & Trail Running Championships in Innsbruck, Austria on June 9th.

At the Long Trail she placed 33rd in the world, 4th on team USA. This resulted in the United States placing 4th in the world! This was no easy feat. The Long Trail was 86.9km (54.1mi) and had over 6500 meters of elevation gain; a bit different from the flat South Bend, Indiana roads. She crossed the line with an impressive time of 13:09:58, especially considering that 66 of the top 135 runners in the world weren't even able to complete the race.

Shea was the youngest runner on team USA by nearly a decade. It is extraordinary what a college student can do to train and perform at the highest level. It will be amazing to see where her future takes her!

Are you a Notre Dame, St. Mary's, or Holy Cross student who wants to join Notre Dame Running Club? We would love to have you as part of the team and accept runners of all abilities. Whether you want to just have fun and run once per week, want to run competitively, want to run everyday, or want to make team USA, we have a place for you!
